Rebecca Carter- Owner/Director
My name is Rebecca Carter, and I am the owner and caregiver in all three classrooms at Little Star. I oversee the Handwriting Without Tears and Zoophonics Curriculums in the Preschool Room along with running the Begindergarten program. I began my career in Elementary Education by student teaching in second grade at Houghton School in Saline and then obtaining a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1995. I taught first grade for four years before I quit to begin running a daycare out of my home in 1999. I also have 22 credits completed towards my Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. We have been at Liberty School now since 2007.
I am the mother of two children. Mitchell is 14 years old and an eighth grader at Saline Middle School. He plays football and baseball, but travel baseball is his passion. He aspires to play in the MLB someday. Madi is 12 years old and a sixth grader at Saline Middle School. She is in the Dance Alliance Repertory Company and currently takes 10 different classes. My husband, Jeff, is a General Manager for an automotive company. We met at Saline High School as high school sweethearts and have been married since 1995. We have 2 imperial Shih-tzu dogs, Hemi and Mopar. We love U of M football, the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers, the Wisconsin Badgers, the Detroit Tigers, and Nascar.
Audrey (Mandia) Fredrick - Lead Preschool Teacher
Audrey graduated from Saline High School in 1996. She received her certification in Child Development in 2001, an Infant/Toddler CDA in 2002, an Associates Degree in Business Administration in 2002, an Associates Degree in Child Care in 2002, and a Bachelor's Degree in Family Life Education in 2007. Audrey has worked as a Lead Infant- Toddler Teacher, Lead Preschool Teacher and Program Coordinator at several child care centers including Gretchen's House in Ann Arbor.
Audrey was married on Valentine's Day in 2008. She and her husband, Jake, live in Saline with their pugs, Lil' and Julius, and cats, Tortileeni and Donut. Audrey loves to watch "Flip This House!" and other home improvement shows. She also loves to watch football, especially the
Carolyn Feldkamp - Preschool Teacher
My name is Ms. Carolyn, I am co-teacher in the preschool room with Ms. Audrey. Ms. Audrey and I have known each other since 2006 when we worked together at a different center. Besides us being co-teachers we are also neighbors . I started my Early Childhood career in 2003 when I joined the Washtenaw Consortium program at Dexter-Saline. The consortium program was a 2+2+2 year process. I graduated high school from Dexter in 2005. I accomplished my CDA at Washtenaw Community College in 2005 and continued onto my Assosiates Degree in Child Care Professional, graduating in 2007. To finish the program I transfered to University of Michigan-Dearborn where I received my Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood in 2009. Now I am looking into continuing my education with a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Special Needs (ages 0-5).
I moved to Saline in 2011 to be closer to work. I live with my boyfriend Chris who I met in 2006. We have a Shar Pei/Lab mixed dog named Norman(2010). Together we like to play golf, even though I am still learning 5 years later which culb to use at different distances, to kayak, and go up north to his cottage. I am currently training with Ms. Melissa for our first 10k race in May 2012 at Bay Shore. After we accomplish this goal we may set another goal for a longer race.
Heather Prokopy- Lead Toddler Teacher
Heather graduated from Saline High School in 2000. She received an Infant/Toddler CDA in 2004, an Associates Degree in Child Development in 2005, a Bachelors Degree in Science, and she has her Elementary Education Teaching Provisional. Heather student taught in 5th at Heritage in Saline. She worked at Little Star all through college. After graduating she was a nanny and worked as a Lead Infant Teacher at Pfizer. This is Heather's fourth year back at Little Star as the Lead Infant/ Toddler Teacher.
Heather has been married for 3 years to her husband Andrew. They have a daughter, Dakoda,who will be two in October. She and her family live in Canton. She loves to travel and has a goal of spending the night in every state.
Heather's favorite thing about teaching toddlers is that they are just learning to be independant. She loves that their individuality starts to show, and that they are constantly learning new things. She is very excited that the toddlers will have a space all their own this year!
Doreen Dennis-Burns (Dee Dee) - Assistant Toddler Teacher
Doreen graduated from Pioneer High School in 1977. She received her Infant/Toddler CDA in 1998 and an Accociates Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2006. Doreen worked as a Lead Teacher and Program Director for 8 years. She has also done Infant/Toddler care for 18 years at Gretchen's House Child Care.
Doreen married Michael in 1999 and has 2 stepsons, Jordy (24) and Jess (18). Doreen enjoys going to her cabin in the U.P., playing darts, gardening, riding the motorcycle and showing her 2 show cars at local shows. Doreen also shares her home with a cat named Bandit.
Alina Phillips - Assistant Toddler Teacher
Hello! My name is Alina Phillips and I am an Assistant Toddler Teacher at Little Star. I obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from EMU in 2004 and a Provisional Elementary Teaching Certificate from EMU in 2009. I completed my semester of student teaching in a third grade classroom in Ypsilanti. In addition to student teaching, I have plenty of experience working with children. I worked as a Lead Infant Teacher at the Pfizer Family Center from 2004-2007, a Support Teacher helping out in classrooms containing children ranging in age from 6 weeks to 12 years from 2007-2009, and as a Substitute Teacher (K-5) in various school districts after receiving my Teaching Certficate.
Some of my favorite activities include scrapbooking, reading, and shopping. I love to watch "America's Funniest Home Videos" with my family and I always have fun going to the water park with my sister, Lori. I married my husband, Ray, in 2008. Together, we enjoy traveling and taking care of our 7 kitties. It's a tradition for us to eat at a Tapas restaurant in every city we visit.
Stephanie Martino - Assistant Toddler Teacher
Stephanie graduated from Saline High School in 1992. She received her BFA from UofM in 1996. She was a dance instructor at Dance Alliance for 8 years. She has been married to her husband, Jamie, for 10 years and has 2 children. Joshua is 7 and in 2nd grade at Harvest. Ella is 4 and in the ESP program at Pleasant Ridge.
Joan Thacker - Lead Infant Teacher
Joan grew up in Ohio and graduated in 1993 from Bowling Green State University with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She has several years experience in a daycare setting, including two years at Little Star. She has lived in Michigan for 14 years with the past 10 being in Milan. Joan has been married to Bill for 17 years and has 2 very busy boys; Will who is 14 and Jacob who is 12.
Some of her favorite things to do are watch her kids play football and baseball, watch the Food Network and Discovery Channel, and vacation anywhere there is a warm beach with her family. She has one pet, a Jack Russell, named Lacy.
Terri Augustine - Assistant Infant Teacher
My name is Terri Augustine. My husband is Rick and we have 2 sons, Brandon and Tyler. We own our own sprinkler and landscape company. I love taking care of infants and toddlers. Before I joined Little Star 3 years ago, I cared for infants in my home. In my spare time away from my 2 jobs, I enjoy walking, shopping, reading, and spending time with my family.
